Compressed Argon Gas

Arc3 Gases creates and sells PurityPlus® Argon for various businesses that need it in Richmond, Virginia.

A handful of qualities eventually led Argon to become an excellent candidate for technical jobs, such as providing nuclear physicists with the heavier atmosphere needed to single out neutrons, as the nineteenth century was coming to a close:

  • its inertness and molecular weight,
  • its comparative abundance in relation to other scarce gases, and
  • its commercial availability.

To be sure, the most common early use for dry, high-purity Argon was gassing the globes in incandescent light bulbs at the start of the twentieth century. In due course, with the invention and commercial emergence of gas metal arc (GMAW or MIG) and tungsten inert gas (TIG), welding in the 1940s necessitated a dense inert gas, generally Argon-based. While none of these are bona fide specialty-gas purity applications, the desire for them is stronger than ever and they still represent a notable part of Argon’s sales volume.

Today, the primary specialty gas applications for high-purity Argon include its use as a carrier or background gas in a range of analytical instrument applications, for example: in the exposure and assessment of trace and ultra-trace elements employing Inductive Coupled Plasma Techniques, in Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption, and in Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. Argon additionally finds application in many methods of Gas Chromatography, in particular those that make use of a high-efficiency Electron Capture Detector (ECD) or an Ultrasonic Detector (USD). It also serves as a carrier gas for analyzing hydrogen in helium with a TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) or USD. As things have progressed, Argon has found its greatest use in the semi-conductor industry as a carrier/purge gas.
